District Value-Added

How This Report Helps You

This report enables you to select data of interest, assess trends over time, and compare results. Use the filters on the left to explore relative progress and achievement data. Depending on the assessment, achievement is reported in Normal Curve Equivalents (NCEs) or scale scores and does not reflect proficiency level. Starting in 2022, the predictive model was used when calculating relative progress in ELA and Math in grades 5-8. In previous years, the gain model was used.

About Value-Added Reports

District Value-Added reports provide reliable measures of the average academic relative progress a district's students made in each tested grade and subject or course. The relative progress measures indicate how successful the district was in helping students meet expected relative progress. The value-added reports can help educators identify relative strengths and areas of concern across grades and subjects. When sufficient data is available, the reports include three years of relative progress measures and a three-year average relative progress measure. Examining patterns and trends across years can offer important insights into the effectiveness of the district's programs.

It's important to view the value-added reports in conjunction with the diagnostic reports, which display patterns of relative progress for groups of students at different achievement levels.

How We Measure Relative Progress

The model we use to calculate relative progress measures depends on the assessments administered. Concept of Relative Progress provides additional details.

Gain Model

This analytic model is used for subjects that are assessed in consecutive grades.

  • IRI in grades K-3
  • ISAT Math and ELA in grades 5-8 in 2021
  • ISAT Math and ELA in grades 4-8 before 2021
Predictive Model

This analytic model is used for subjects that are assessed in non-consecutive or consecutive grades, including when students move from one assessment type to another:

  • ISAT Math and ELA in grade 10 in 2019
  • ISAT Math and ELA in grades 3, 4, and 10 in 2021
  • ISAT Math and ELA in grades 3-8 and 10 in 2022
  • ISAT Science in grades 5, 8, and 11 in 2022
  • ISAT Math and ELA in grades 3-8 and 11 in 2023
  • ISAT Science in grades 5, 8, and 11 in 2023
  • PSAT NMSQT in grade 10
  • SAT in grade 11
Assessments analyzed with the Predictive model are reported in scale scores. During the 2022-23 school year, ISAT assessments for English Language Arts and Math were administered in grade 11 instead of in grade 10 as in the past. In addition, some students that took these assessments in the 2021-22 school year while in grade 10 were not required to take the assessments while in grade 11 during the 2022-23 school year. For reporting and accountability purposes, the scores for this group of students were used as grade 11 scores for the 2022-23 school year alongside the grade 11 scores of students who were required to take the assessments. As a result, a different approach was needed for the 2022-23 analysis for the grade 11 assessments. For more information, refer to the Statistical Models and Business Rules document.

Making Comparisons

Use options in the filter panel to add data from other years, tests and subjects, districts and schools, and more. Your options might be limited to the data that you have access to.

Up to 10 additional districts or schools, can be viewed in the report using the Add Comparison option under the Districts and Schools section in the filter panel.

Downloading Value-Added Reports

Value-Added reports for a specific school or district can be saved as an Excel spreadsheet (.xlsx format) by clicking on the Download Report button in the upper right corner of the report. A dialogue box opens where the filename can be determined. Click Download Report to save the report to your computer. The resulting spreadsheet will contain value-added data for the district or school selected from the main drop-down menu at the top of the filter panel.
